The Organiser of South Africa's first half-marathon for disabled people has won the 2006 Woman Of The Year Award. Occupational therapist Esther Watson of George made it a double at the Shoprite Checkers/SABC2 Woman Of The Year Award on Thursday night by also winning its sport category.

Accepting the award at the International Convention Centre, an overwhelmed Watson said she was accepting the award as a voice for disabled people and the six other women who had volunteered to organise the Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge.

Six other women were honoured for work in various fields. Khomotso Choma, joint winner of The Apprentice South Africa, won the business category award for creating a construction company with a current turnover of R44-million.

Nursing sister Abegail Ntleko, 72, was tops in the social welfare category for her Clouds of Hope Community project, which deals with HIV and Aids problems in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Nurse Dianne Powell, who recently launched the Community Eye, Primary and District Eye Care projects in the Western Cape, won the health category.

Veterinary pioneer Professor Cheryl McCrindle won the education award for establishing a course to help vets improve aid to the poorest of farmers. Professor Valerie Mizrahi won the science and technology award for her TB research, and the arts, culture and communications section was won by SA Navy Rear Admiral K Litchfield Tshabalala for organising change management seminars for naval staff.
